How to Join the Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce

NOTE: Be prepared to read carefully and follow instructions.

The Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce is a well-respected resource for qualified Virtual Assistant professionals to reach new heights of success and profitability. We are revolutionizing the industry, making great strides in advancing awareness and creating opportunities for our members that you won't find anywhere else.

There is more to running a business than simply providing services. With our tools, resources and education, we are empowering Virtual Assistants to run smarter businesses that in turn brings them greater personal happiness, business success and client satisfaction.

But we don't represent everyone. The VACOC is actively engaged in an ongoing effort on multiple fronts to market and promote our members. Our reputation is based on ensuring to the marketplace that only the most qualified and competent of administrative professionals are admitted to our ranks. Our membership process is our means of making that assessment as best we can without requiring specific and costly certifications and testing.

Membership Fee

The fee for membership with the Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce is $29.99 per month. In the alternative, members may opt to pay $299 annually.

Membership Process

There are three basic parts involved in our membership process:

  1. Forum Registration
  2. Short Essay (500 word minimum)
  3. Adding Membership Link, Completing Profile & Selecting Subscription Option

I. Initial Qualifying Criteria

To become a member of the Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce you must first meet the following initial qualifying criteria:

  1. You must have at least 5 years upper level administrative experience in the real (non-virtual) business world. This is the foremost professional qualification that is expected of those entering the Virtual Assistant profession. Examples of upper level experience includes positions such as secretary, administrative assistant, executive assistant, office manager, legal assistant, paralegal, real estate assistant, etc. Receptionist and clerical positions are NOT considered upper level administrative experience.

  2. You must be highly skilled before entering the profession. Virtual Assistance is the profession of independent administrative professionals who are competent, qualified and masterfully skilled.

  3. Your primary service offerings must be administrative in nature. Virtual Assistance is the profession of administrative experts. While you might offer additional services that are creative or technical, you must understand that those are different and separate from administration. If you do not understand these distinctions and the business you are in is not primarily administrative in nature, you will not be eligible for membership.

  4. You must be operating a true, legitimate, committed business. Freelancing on the side, telecommuting, or working for a virtual staffing agency does not qualify.

  5. You must operate a solo practice. We do not represent secretarial services, virtual staffing agencies, virtual teams or telecommuters.

  6. You must believe in ethics, honesty and integrity in business. If you have engaged in slander or libel (which is essentially the telling of lies about a person in an effort to defame or discredit them), intellectual property theft, or trade name or copyright infringement against another Virtual Assistant, you will not be eligible for membership.

  7. You are serious about the profession and committed to growing in your business knowledge and success. The Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce is not a social club (although we do have lots of fun and camaraderie!). Our membership forum is primarily an educational platform. Your interest in joining should be to learn more about business, how to run your business more profitably and successfully, and how serve clients better while elevating the profession to the benefit of all. Our ideal applicants approach their participation with the curiosity of a student and a mind open to learning.

  8. Make sure we are a fit. We are looking to align ourselves only with competent, qualified, business-minded Virtual Assistant professionals who want to elevate the profession—and create real opportunities in the process. We have a very specific focus and mission at the VACOC—namely helping Virtual Assistants grow smarter, more successful businesses, and better educating our marketplace and promoting the profession. It is therefore imperative that members share the same values and goals, and fit our ideal Virtual Assistant member profile so that we are all communicating from the same place.

  9. Required reading. You must read the Home, History, Glossary, Ethics and Client Guide pages before doing anything else as these are key to our core tenets and understandings. This organization is only for true Virtual Assistants--not telecommuters nor those running what is more accurately terms secretarial services, staffing agencies or "team VA" businesses. Therefore, you must first understand what the differences are before you will be approved for membership.

  10. Professional business website is required. It must be in a completed state (no "coming soon" or "under construction" or splash pages). Your web site content will be reviewed to determine if your business is a Virtual Assistant practice. Denial is automatic if this is not found to be the case.

  11. Membership button must be displayed on your website. This will be provided to you once you have been approved for membership.

II. Forum Registration

If you determine that you meet the qualifying criteria above, the next step is to complete the account registration for the VACOC Masterminding Forum. Make sure you read the rules and terms of use carefully before you certify that you meet our membership criteria and agree to the terms and conditions. On the next page after that, be sure to answer every question and fill out form fields completely.

What Happens Next

Once your account registration is received, it is reviewed by a membership administrator (reviews are performed once per week). Keep in mind that not only are we looking to make sure you have met the qualifying criteria, but also demonstrated the ability to pay attention to details and follow instructions. These are critical characteristics of professional competence; if there is any failure, the account will be automatically denied.

If you pass the initial review, you will be able to log into the forum and view a message with an invitation and instructions for completing the essay portion. If initial registration is not approved, you will be able to log into the forum and view a post explaining the reason why.

Once we receive your essay, it will be reviewed by our membership committee. If your essay is approved, you will be able to log into the forum and view a post with instructions for the next steps. If you essay is not approved, you will be able to log into the forum and view a message explaining the reason why.

A few caveats...

Applicants are expected to demonstrate that their knowledge and abilities match the caliber of Virtual Assistant professionals that the VACOC represents. Denial is usually based on failure to demonstrate a professional level of competence. This includes not following directions, poor written communication skills, misspelling, sloppy presentation, and lack of proper formatting, grammar and punctuation knowledge.

Another reason for membership denial is that the applicant is not a Virtual Assistant. Virtual Assistants are not telecommuters, they are not virtual staffing agencies or "virtual teams," and they are not secretarial services. Virtual Assistance is a brand of administrative support completely different from those things. This organization does not represent those categories of businesses. Additionally, if your business is web design, you are a web designer. If your business is bookkeeping, you are a bookkeeper. These are not the same thing as Virtual Assistance. If you do not understand these distinctions, you will not meet our membership criteria. Your website will be reviewed to ensure it reflects your understanding.

If at any time it comes to our attention that the questions you answered, or any information you present is not truthful or is a misrepresentation in any way, we reserve the right to deny or deactivate the account without notice.

Denise S.I have loved being a member of this group — as a matter of fact, this is the only group I belong to anymore and have pretty much been here from the early days. My business is finally getting going, and all the information and experience and help that I have read/received from you and everyone else in this community has been wonderful. One way the VACOC has helped me is by making me see things in a different light — sort of thinking outside the box I guess you could say. You know how you have one perspective, but then you hear someone talking about it and all of a sudden it’s like a light bulb goes on in your head and you say, "Hey, that’s a way I never thought of." Secondly, just knowing that if I ever needed to, I could come here, ask my questions and know that I would get great advice about the whole situation and what I could do/say to get better results and I wouldn’t have to flounder around trying to figure it out on my own. I think the biggest way the VACOC has helped me is through encouragement. There were many days over the last two years when I wondered what I had done. Would I ever get clients and would I ever be able to help provide for my family instead of dragging them down? I was able to come to the forum and read of others who were having the same doubts I was, and it helped me to go on for at least one more day. When I was having problems, there were others who had experienced the same issues and it was a blessing to know that I wasn’t the only one who had gone through these things.

Colleen J.I love the VACOC. I personally benefit on a daily basis. I have gained friendships that never would have been without your organization. I received an even greater benefit professionally. I have learned so much and continue to. I recently had enough courage to submit an article to the Gritty Business Buzz. I am very proud of it. I am very proud to display, blog and write about being a member of VACOC.

In the short time I have been a member, the people at the VACOC have helped me choose a niche for my business, which allowed me to put more focus on my marketing efforts. I haven't gotten a client yet, but I am quite sure that the right clients are out there, I just need time to find them. The plethora of advice and camaradarie has also been wonderful. I only hope that when my own business starts to move forward, I can be as helpful to others as this board has been. I have always found it remarkable that this industry is so giving. Everyone is always willing to help everyone else out, so very different form the normal cut-throat business people. Which is, I guess, what makes being a Virtual Assistant so special. I know I have more questions than advice at the moment, but I'm learning, and with the VACOC I know I will be the best VA that I possibly can be.

Sandra W.I found the VACOC through word of mouth about a year ago and have benefited from it mainly because of the diverse backgrounds and experiences that are present in the forum. Listening to these experiences and learning from senior Virtual Assistants has been a great asset for me. Although I graduated from AssistU more than a year ago and have worked part-time in my practice since then, I have just begun to learn what I need to know to really achieve the level of success that I know I am capable of. I always take something away from the boards: encouragement, computer or software help, or just a chuckle. Tonight I was reading a post by a Virtual Assistant and I could feel her excitement and joy. I just wanted to shout with her. The benefits to being a VACOC member including mentors, resources, training, friends and connections are priceless and I know that I don't take advantage of even a small portion of them.
