TACOMA WA, October 1, 2008—Solopreneurship is on the rise. In particular, the growth of women-owned businesses has exploded over the past two decades—and these companies tend not to have employees (approx. 75%) and tend to be service-based (over 50%). According to a 2006 study conducted by the SBA's Office of Advocacy, home-based sole proprietors generate $102 billion in annual revenue.

However, operating as sole proprietorships means that their personal assets— their homes, their cars, their jewelry, their bank accounts—are at risk of being seized if a disgruntled customer gets a judgment against them. Educating solo service professionals, like Virtual Assistants, how to identify the legal issues that they face so that they can protect themselves economically has been a calling for Nina Kaufman, an award-winning small business attorney, edutainer, and entrepreneur. Given that 80% of all businesses fail within the first five years, and that ltigation costs have grown four times faster than the overall economy since 1930, small businesses need protection more than ever.

On October 16, Nina will be presenting a teleseminar entitled, "Are You Exposing Yourself? How Choosing the Right Business Form Provides Protection and Peace of Mind" to the Virtual Assistant commuity. Sponsored by the Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce, this teleclass will help Virtual Assistants and other solo professionals identify the benefits and drawbacks of different business entities so they they can take steps to protect themselves, their businesses, and their families.

A few of the issues that will be covered include:

  • the different kinds of business entities that will protect your assets
  • how to weigh and balance the options to choose a form that's right for your business
  • the drawbacks to handling business formation online
  • how to find the professional advisors who can guide you to your goals
